SUMI is a native C++ effect plugin for After Effects that simulates ink travelling through paper, sumi ink on washi. Directable ink bleed on simulated paper: washi, watercolor and kent.
Ink & Washi Bleed for After Effects
A deterministic simulation of ink travelling through paper fibres — drop by drop, frame by frame, on your timeline. Every behaviour is open as a parameter, so the ink takes exactly the shape you direct. No stock footage, no hand-animated masks.
Washi, watercolor and kent paper models — with fibre scale, fibre strength and absorbency variation under your control. The ink does not simply grow; it travels where the fibres let it.
Feed any layer in as a texture map and SUMI treats its luminance as absorbency — your scanned washi, your logo, your footage. The bleed follows your material.
Pigment gathers at the drying edge. Water runs ahead of the ink. Grain, blotch and ring textures live inside the fill, and overlapping drops darken and blend like wet paint.
Sumi black is only the default. Give each ink its own color, with per-drop hue jitter — and where wet meets wet, the colors diffuse into one another like real paint.
Craft a single drop in manual mode. In scatter mode, spread drops across a region or run them along a path — with splash droplets and radial streaks when you need them. Placement alone changes the image.
In manual mode, a drop can begin from a shape you provide. In Soak, the ink seeps outward from its outline. In Fill, it floods the shape itself. Up to five crafted drops, each with its own color diffusion into the surrounding ink.
